How to use this tool

When you only need the words

A circular arrives as a WhatsApp photo and a few paragraphs of it have to go into a reply. A notice is pasted on a wall and you need its text in a letter. An old order exists only as a scan. In each case the document is already written — the work is getting the Hindi words out of the picture without typing them again. That is what this page does: the text opens ready to copy, and the Word file is there too if you need the layout.

Unicode or Kruti Dev

Most general OCR tools give you Unicode only. Many offices still keep their files in Kruti Dev 010, where Unicode text pasted in turns into boxes or the wrong letters. Here you can switch the text to Kruti Dev before copying and paste it straight into such a file — the same converter the rest of this site uses, so matras and conjuncts come out the way a Kruti Dev typist would type them.

Bad photos are cleaned first

Phone photos are rarely straight or evenly lit. Before reading, the image is turned the right way up, its tilt is corrected, and shadows are evened out. Measured on real government documents, word accuracy is around 95–96% on a clean scan and around 88% on a difficult table page, so read the text through before you send it on — names and numbers especially.

Honest limits, and where your file goes

Handwriting is not read reliably, and decorative or very small fonts are weak spots. Unlike most PDF and photo tools on this site, OCR runs on our server, because the Hindi reading engine and the photo-cleaning steps live there. The file is processed and deleted; it is not kept or looked at. For a confidential page, crop or cut out only the part you need first.
