Compress a PDF

Bring a heavy PDF down to the size a government portal or an email accepts. If the form gives a limit, type the KB and the tool aims for it, and tells you plainly when a file cannot get that small. The file is deleted from our server as soon as your download is ready.

How to use this tool

  1. Upload the PDF you want to shrink.
  2. Pick a compression level, or turn on "a specific max file size" and enter the KB limit you were given.
  3. Download the compressed file. If your exact target cannot be reached, you are told why and offered the smallest size that can.

The upload limit problem

Almost every Indian government portal, exam form and job application has a hard size limit (often 200 KB, 500 KB or 2 MB) and a phone-scanned document sails past it without trying. Rejected uploads at the end of a form are one of the most common and most avoidable frustrations there is.

What compression actually does to a PDF

Most of the weight in a scanned PDF is images, not text. Compression works by re-encoding those images at a lower resolution and higher compression ratio, and by dropping data the file does not need: duplicate resources, unused objects, over-detailed embedded thumbnails. Text and vector content are essentially free by comparison and are left alone.

That means there is a genuine trade-off, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. Push a scan hard enough and small print starts to smear. Compress to meet the limit you actually have, not to the smallest number available, and check the result before you submit it: especially if a clerk has to read a stamp or a signature on it.

This tool uploads your file, and here is why

Merge, split and page-arranging on this site all run inside your browser and never send your document anywhere. Compression is the exception, and it is only fair to say so before you pick a file rather than afterwards.

The reason is mechanical. Shrinking a PDF means reaching inside it, pulling out every embedded image, re-encoding each one at a lower quality and writing it back. Browsers can create images and they can rearrange PDF pages, but they cannot yet re-encode the images already buried inside an existing PDF. So this one runs on our server: the file is uploaded, compressed, handed back, and deleted as soon as the download has been built. It is not stored, logged or looked at.

If the document is confidential and that is not good enough, a fair position, there are two honest alternatives. Use PDF split first to pull out only the pages you actually have to send, which runs locally, and compress just those. Or use an offline program on your own computer; PDFsam Basic is free and open source, though it does not compress, and Ghostscript will if you are comfortable at a command line.

Before you compress

If the PDF is big because it has pages you do not need, split those pages out first; that costs nothing in quality. If it is big because it was scanned at 600 dpi when 200 dpi would do, compression is exactly the right answer. If it contains only a photograph, the image compress tool gives you finer control.

इसमें एक सौदा भी है: जितना ज्यादा घटाएँगे, छोटी लिखावट उतनी धुँधली पड़ेगी। इसलिए जितनी सीमा है उतना ही घटाइए, सबसे छोटा नहीं। और जमा करने से पहले एक बार खोलकर देख लीजिए कि मुहर और हस्ताक्षर पढ़े जा रहे हैं या नहीं।

फाइल इसलिए भारी है कि उसमें बेकार के पेज पड़े हैं, तो पहले पीडीएफ स्प्लिट से वे पेज निकाल दीजिए। उसमें क्वालिटी जरा भी कम नहीं होती।

Frequently Asked Questions

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends almost entirely on how much of the file is scanned images and at what resolution. A 600 dpi phone scan usually shrinks dramatically; a text-only PDF that is already small will barely change.

Will compression make my document unreadable?

It can if pushed too far. That is the trade-off. Compress to the limit you actually need and check the output before submitting it anywhere.

Is a watermark added?

No, and no account is required. The compressed file is returned as a plain download and the upload is discarded.

Does PDF compression upload my file?

Yes, and unlike merge and split on this site, it has to. Making a PDF smaller means re-encoding the images inside it, which a browser cannot do to an existing PDF, so the work happens on our server. The file is deleted the moment your download is built. If the document is sensitive, split out only the pages you need first, that part runs entirely on your device, or compress it offline on your own computer.

Which tools on this site work without uploading?
